# Create a service

> Add a service and set its name, type, tax, and categories.

This is the starting point for a service — its name, tax, and how it's shown and organised. After you create it, you set its [lengths and prices](/set-up/services/variants), [content](/set-up/services/content-and-media), and [booking rules](/set-up/services/booking-settings).

## Add a service

    Go to **Settings → Catalogue → Services**, then add a new service.

    Complete the fields below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Save the service. You can then set its lengths, prices, and other details on the tabs across the top.

  A new service must be saved once before you can add its variants and other details.

## Name and type

| Setting          | What it's for                                                                                                           | Required |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------- |
| **Service name** | The name customers see, such as "Haircut".                                                                              | Yes      |
| **Slug**         | The part of the web address for this service. Lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. Filled in for you from the name. | Yes      |
| **Service type** | **One-on-one** — one customer at a time.                                                                                | Yes      |
| **Tax rate**     | The tax for this service: **No tax** or **10% GST**. It applies to every variant.                                       | Yes      |

## Display and status

| Setting            | What it's for                                               | Required |
| ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------- | -------- |
| **Display colour** | A colour for this service in your calendar.                 | No       |
| **Featured**       | Highlight this service on your booking page.                | No       |
| **Active**         | **On** — bookable and shown to customers. **Off** — hidden. | Yes      |
| **Internal notes** | Notes only your team can see.                               | No       |

## Categories

Group the service so customers can find it. Tick one or more [categories](/set-up/services/categories). If you choose more than one, pick a **primary category** — the main one, used in the customer's navigation.

  If you change the tax rate after adding variants, check the prices on every variant afterwards.
